    The results showed that the surface textures on specimen GCr15 bearing steel material filled composite solid lubricant and lubricated with grease (TLG), reduced the friction by 27%, 46%, and 75% of the grease only (TG), solid lubricant only (TL), and nonlubricated (T) specimens, respectively. Lubricating oil is the life blood of oil wetted machinery. In-service oil analysis can provide information about machine wear condition, lubricant contamination as well as lubricant condition (Figure 1). Reliability engineers and maintenance professionals can make maintenance decisions based on diagnoses of oil analysis results.

    Advances in solid lubricating films for vacuum and high temperature applications are reviewed. Traditional lubricants (e.g. graphite and dichalcogenides) are being improved and new lubricating materials (e.g. amorphous carbons) are being discovered with the aid of recent developments in deposition processes and surface analytical methods. Thin, adherent sputtered MoS 2 and ion plated metallic (Au, Ag, Pb) lubricating films are primarily used in precision contacting triboelement surfaces where wear debris formation is critical and high reliability requirements have to be satisfied.
