A Shabby Genteel Story. A Shabby Genteel Story is an early and unfinished novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. It was first printed among other stories and sketches in his Miscellanies; a note there by Thackeray, dated 10 April , describes it as "only the first part" of a longer story which was "interrupted at a sad period of the writer's own life" and never subsequently completed. "A Shabby Genteel Story" () and other short compositions explored the world of rogues (dishonest people) and fools in a spirit of extreme and bitter disappointment. The Irish Sketch Book () and Notes of a Journey from Cornhill to Cario (), supposedly written by the confirmed Londoner Mr. M. A. Titmarsh, were in a lighter vein.
